Fall 2017 Issue

elcome to the Fall 2017 edition of Global Voices. In this issue, we have focused on student experiences in Modern Languages and Literatures, both at home and abroad. Each of our featured stories speaks to a rich, diverse, complex world with our student’s not merely observing, learning, and conducting research while enhancing their language skills, but in many cases actively intervening and changing the world they experience. From working on a sustainable farm in Swabia, Germany, to trading on the floor in Tokyo, from the politics of Soviet cuisine to an internship in innovative technology transfer in Pavia, from editing a criminal law and policy journal in Washington, DC to contextualizing a family legacy in a course on Italian Political Culture, and from teaching the art of Ikebana at W&M to assisting refugees in Vienna,  MLL students engage with and impact their world through a wide range of summer study abroad programs, individual internships, volunteer work, and directed research.

In addition to our featured stories this fall, we also present four faculty profiles with video interviews in this issue. We spoke with new faculty members Michael Hill (Associate Professor of Chinese Studies),  Brett Brehm (Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies), Huang-wen Lai (Japanese Studies), and Noel Blanco-Mourelle (Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies) about their research and teaching. We also had a conversation with Michael Leruth (Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies) about his recent book, Fred Forest’s Utopia: Media Art and Activism, just published by MIT Press.
