Fall 2018

Welcome to the Fall 2018 Issue of Global Voices, William & Mary’s Modern Languages and Literatures newsletter. Our students have been busy this past summer, and this issue is full of stories and reports on summer study abroad activities, research trips, and work and internship experiences in foreign languages.

Back on campus in Williamsburg, things have also been quite international. From the Great W&M Asia Cook Off to World Pasta Day at the Italian House, culinary traditions were studied in an academic and a hands-on manner. The tutors in our language houses organized a week-long, multicultural Fairy Tale event, with each house screening a fairy-tale movie from their culture, serving typical snacks, and facilitating a discussion on culture-specific aspects of the fairy tale tradition. We had many guest speakers give talks on diverse topics and speak to our students about their research.

MLL welcomed a diverse group of new faculty this fall. We spoke with Angélica Serna Jeri and Rachel Varra, Assistant Professors of Hispanic Studies, with Vanessa Brutsche, Matteo Cantarello, Anna Horáková, and Daniel Johnson, Visiting Assistant Professors of German, Hispanic, French and Francophone, and Japanese Studies, respectively, and with Davinia Pastor Pastor, Visiting Lecturer of Hispanic Studies. You can read up on their research and teaching interests below!

Thank you to the Web Committee for gathering all our stories!
