Fall 2019

elcome to the Fall 2019 Issue of Global Voices, William & Mary’s Modern Languages and Literatures newsletter. We have many interesting stories for you from Washington Hall and big news from our Language Houses! Of course, you can also read up on what our students have been doing this past summer.

We had a busy fall this year, with the Language Houses participating in the Homecoming Parade for the first time. Several of our programs held Homecoming Events – if you couldn’t make it this year, we hope to welcome you in 2021! French and Francophone Studies students organized a Fête de la Recherche, and German Studies celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Wall with a weekend of activities. (By the way, if you were a young W&M student in the fall of 1989 and found yourself on the Berlin Wall as it was coming down, you might be interested in this discovery!)

MLL also welcomed new faculty this fall. We spoke with Paul Vierthaler, Assistant Professor of Chinese Studies, and Robin Ellis, Assistant Professor of German Studies. You can read up on their research and teaching interests below!

Over the decades, many of you have lived in, or participated in the numerous events held at W&M’s Language Houses in Randolph Complex. The time has come for us to say farewell to the houses, as they do not meet our needs for accessibility for educational activities anymore. While we have become attached to our houses (the murals!) and feel some sadness about leaving the floors in Randolph Complex, we are excited to move into our new and newly renovated lodgings in Hardy and Landrum Halls! Interviews for applicants begin in February, and Fall 2020 will mark this new phase in the history of W&M’s Language Houses! Stay tuned for updates on the move.
